European Commission’s Expert Group on Urban Mobility adopts new recommendations on public transport

Published on August 29, 2024

On 10 June, the European Commission’s Expert Group on Urban Mobility (EGUM) convened to advance the 2021 EU Urban Mobility Framework. This was the occasion to adopt recommendations to enhance public transport with shared mobility and to use the Social Climate Fund (SCF) to support public transport. They target the European Commission, Member States, and local authorities.

EIT Urban Mobility contributed to the recommendations, drawing on insights from its studies, including Integrated and Safe: How Innovation Can Increase Micromobility End User Adoption and Unlocking the Future of Mobility with European Data Spaces. The SCF report features several EIT Urban Mobility initiatives, such as those in the Urban Climate Adaptation in the Nordics (UCAN) report, highlighting sustainable transport solutions.

During the plenary of the session, other key points were also addressed:

Future urban mobility and sustainable urban spaces

Discussions focused on creating inclusive and sustainable urban spaces to support the European Green Deal by fostering eco-friendly and liveable urban environments. EIT Urban Mobility has been contributing to two significant reports on the future of urban mobility and street space management, promoting innovative solutions for sustainable transportation.

  Promoting smaller, greener vehicles

The meeting also addressed active mobility and vehicle size. Proposals included adjusting parking fees based on vehicle size to encourage the use of smaller, eco-friendly cars, aligning with EIT Urban Mobility’s strategy to promote greener transport through economic incentives.

The new EGUM recommendations are key for implementing the general goals of the EU Urban Mobility Framework. They provide a roadmap for enhancing public transport, integrating shared mobility services, and improving inclusive transport solutions. EIT Urban Mobility's contributions offer actionable insights and practical examples, inspiring and guiding policymakers at the EU, national, and local levels. These recommendations are particularly critical at this point in time, as the new EU Commission sets its political agenda for the next five years.
